Threadless Retails Opens in Chicago

Threadless finally launched a retail store in Chicago. Although I don't think Threadless are quite what they used to be a year or two ago the store looks pretty impressive and has been kitted and fitted with loads of new stuff including new iMacs which look superb. This little quote from their site explains it all really.

"We decided to focus the store on just the newest 2 weeks worth of designs plus a few exclusives, starting with the Glennz/Arzie13 tee. There will only be 20 designs for sale in the store at any given moment. Each of the 20 designs gets its own special area complete with an LCD display cycling through various photos and close-ups of the design, comments from the original submission and other rad stuff. The designs for sale will change weekly, as will the store window."

They're also introducing some unique features such as releasing new tees in store first before announcing them online on Fridays, Threadless Upstairs - a space in store to offer group crits, digital/creative lessons and seminars and talks by winning designs which could be very engaging. Hopefully some will appear on YouTube soon. They've also introduced a nifty bag policy - Reusable Tote-style Bags.

I saw this awesome little exhibition whilst in Leeds recently (well back in July). I can't remember all the details but something to do with a small group of crafters/illustrators. Amazing little bird boxs and patterned woodblocks - really nice asthetics to the little exhibition. I don't really have any more info other than the Art Galleries website, I really should pay more attention in future.

Wall graphics and vinyls are way cool. Blik have been doing a 'heart' threadless promo for a while now and some of them look awesome. Maybe when I finally get a place on my own after graduating I may have to invest. Blik are also running a vote system to turn many other Threadless designs into surface graphics here.

Great playful little site and some really nice photography of the vinyls and stickers in actions (they might not actually be vinyls though).

I've been a bit of a geek lately and trying to sort out my music collection and get all the album artwork. I know stupid ah but it's a complete mess. Anyway whilst looking for a Bonobo album I stumbled on this gem. Never listened to Quantic but very cool album cover.

Part of the One Off's Remixes and B Sides collection, kind of along the lines of DJ Kicks, Back to Mine, etc. I'm sure you could build an epic music collection just by having all these albums. Honest.

The portfolio of Audrey Kawasaki is absolutely amazing. There is a massive volume of work and the detail in depiction of facial features give them a strange lure. The majority of the work is done directly onto wood which really enhances the work and gives it a tactile quality.

Hi-res photos from Marc Aurel. Some really nice touchs for this new collection website. Sit on the home pages as models hair wafts around in the air. The way the images and figures move independently of each other, especially between transitions in the photos and flip book-like navigation works really effectivly and makes the work far more engaging presentation wise.

Daft Punk

I've been reading a lot of stuff on Daft Punk recently. Following in Interstella 555, they decided to make a a movie titled Electroma. I'm yet to see it but apparently, the plot revolves around their robot mask/head motif going on a road trip in America to be turned back into humans. There's very little dialogue in the movie but I'm rather intrigued by the 70mins featurette.

This Film is Not Yet Rated

I watched a really good documentary on the film rating system in the USA. The doco, This Film is Not Yet Rated included some really nice animation interludes to explain points and highlight quotes and statistics. For anyone who is remotely interested in how movies are rated/censored as the doco argues it is well worth a watch if not for the quirky and engaging animations. The above is a screen grab from one animation to show the style but as the doco features mainly on why films are given NC17 (No Children under the age of 17 - sort of an 18 in the UK) the majority of content is perhaps not best for impressionable minors.

Not an amazing flyer for an exhibition at Saint Martins but a vehicle for me to rant about universities. Makes me realise how bad my university is for the lack any sort of good advertisement - well thought out design - for work of undergrads not in their final year and the lack of exhibitions especially for people in Vis Com. Maybe its just that this one is in London, but for the last 3rd year (2nd year in England) work in progress exhibition, the flyers and design were so appalling and weren't even offered to be designed by a Graphic Designer (designed by a fashion designer I think). I'll try and dig out a copy and post it up online. Stupid university politics.

Very very very cool. I don't know much about this item apart from being sent it from Dan at my last work experience - kudos Dan. Hopefully I'll find out a little more about their construction at a later date when I get round to emailing the person behind them.

They look pretty amazing and so tactile - they really remind me of the Blur video Coffee and TV (amazing and well worth watching, see the end of the post) and a bit of the opening titles of Napoleon Dynamite (again see end of post). From my very little knowledge of crochet they look very detailed and must be reinforced with some skeleton - make me really want to know how to do them though - can't be that hard being a fairly good knitter.

Hopefully I'll have more news at a latter date and maybe post some more of my knitted stuff? We'll see.

For the more lazy creatives among us, Scrapblog lets you create interactive scrapbooks for just about anything using the intuitive online interface. Though its a bit cheesy and by no means a substitute for a good old fashioned cut a paste book of your latest excursion or exploration on the high seas, its a nice little web app that plug in to plenty of web 2.0 sites such as facebook and flickr make it a quick and easy task - even better there no registration required and once your done you can email it to friends or publish it on your blog. I think it's defiantly one for the web 2.0 lovers who don't quite get the same enjoyment of peeling PVA off your fingers.

Pretty amazing synergy of technology and fashion featured at the recent Diesel Spring/Summer 08 catwalk show. Apparently this is the first ever holographic catwalk and it looks pretty spectacular. For me it does feel like the best of marriages, I think it perhaps detracts from the garments, after all that's what your there for right?

I don't normally like overtly flash based sites especially ones like this where a physical portfolio has been taken and made digital. Sometimes analogue things such as folios should stay that way as the online world offers new opportunities which are often hindered by real world objects that have been transported across.

Objections aside, at least there is a certain fluidity to flicking through the page in this example and bar the first couple of examples, the work on show makes up for it all.

Stuck for a case for your new MacBook. Really cool idea from a user at Instructables.com for a home made MacBook sleeve if you are strapped for cash from the big purchase. Shame we don't really have those Tyvek envelopes in the UK as Fedex aren't over here - works really well as a retro design icon/packaging. Maybe for the best as I'm on a green front and well Tyvek is completely un-recyclable in order for it to be water proof. Whoops.

Science of Sleep

I finally got round to watching Science of Sleep about a month ago. Its a great movie by Gondry (one of my favourite music video directors and the best in the Work of Director DVD series) it didn't deliver as much as I'd hoped, but I think Eternal Sunshine was too a good a movie to top. Its still a great story and has some great shots in it. What I like most about Gondry's work are the surrealist pieces that take form in hands on crafts and really distinctive animation style. The above images are just some of the amazing creations featured in the move. I really like the typewriter that is typed on by a spiders legs when dictated to by the movies main character. Genius!

Ben Wittner has some really great pieces of photography on show in his folio. I real like the humour behind some pieces whilst on the flip side the insightful window in to his subjects featured in other shots and their willingness to let the camera invade their personal space. Perhaps the best thing of all about the actual website are the quirky animations on the navigation at the top. I love that typewriter and little camera are rather nostalgic.

I think the people who commission work for Oranges' advertising on TV know whats good and isn't. The last few ad campaigns have been great. The current campaign (top) is very whimsical which I love - reminds me a bit of Loco Roco (a great game by the way, probably best game out on PSP and best game).

I've been doing a little research into the work and it seems that most of the motion video work has been done by an excellent ad agency called Fallon. They are a US based company but have offices in London who do the majority of work that gets commissioned this side of the pond. There portfolio of work is impressive and is full or really creative work. They did the previously featured Skoda cake ad and plenty of other. Take a look at:

Not a clue what this is all about but looks very intriguing. I think I'll have to get a friend to translate it for me. I did read an article in either Graphik or Creative Review from this month that featured something similar. I think it might be a graffiti like knitting scheme where people go out and knit round railings and such using double pointed kneedles. Looks very intriguing. Stranger Than Fiction

Just read a post over on tummy-ache that reminded me I recently watched Stranger Than Fiction and had forgotten to mention how amazing and inspiring it was.

A great concept for a movie and well delivered but most importantly the motion graphics that were applied on top of the live action were amazing and extremely well executed. I've been told they were done by MK12 - there is some interesting footage on there for pitching stages as well.

If you haven't seen the film, then buy or rent a copy as its well worth it. There are a few samples in the attached video above but there is a nice documentary on the DVD. I'll see if I can find it on YouTube. Enjoy!

Nigel Peake at Analogue Books

I managed to visit the current exhibition by Nigel Peake at Analogue books the other day. The photos above don't do the work justice and there aren't as many as there usually are on Analogue Books flickr page. There is a great amount of fine detail throughout the pieces of work - extremely engaging.

For anyone who hasn't heard of Analogue books, it is a great book shop for design with a little gallery space at the back. They have a great selection of Graphic design books, one off and small run publications. Most can be bought online at but what I love the most is they publish photos to give you a taster of each months exhibition. It's a great thing if you don't live in Edinburgh or can't get to the exhibition in time. There is also a large back catalogue of work from previous exhibitions which I highly recommend having a look through. Matt Swells, Drifting is one of my personal favourites.

I saw this a few weeks ago whilst at work experience. Saw an article on motion tracking that I might give ago at in a couple of weeks which reminded me about it. Seeing the videos on http://www.ericlerner.com/ are far better than on YouTube - they seem to look less realistic than when shown on his website. The animation and character designs are great but I can't help feel that the last 3 of the 5 in the collection lack the pace and vibrancy that the first two do. Not sure if this is because they are a little shorter or they lack as a good soundtrack but still a lot of work has gone into this from someone with talent.

Retro Computers - Works of Art?

Some new tees have been released on Threadless and theres some good stuff as well. I think that the quality of tees have been slipping a bit recently, so its good to see some good looking pieces of work. Surprise suprise though, Olly Moss comes out with another great design. His website is worth a look as well even if not all the illustrations are at the same high standard.

There so much detail on this illustration - remind me of something Amy would do.

Pixar Zoetrope

This is a great piece of work from Pixar. Not particularly shown to its best ability on this video (I guess it must of been filmed very cautiously). In case you don't get whats happening, a set of models spins very fast and LEDs are flashed to give the impression that the characters are animating - its amazing to see but one that you need to see in person.

There are are few days left to still catch the Pixar exhibition on at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh - its well worth it in my opinion.

Crafts and Cakes - Exhibition/Sale

In case your in Edinburgh this coming bank holiday Monday, there are some of my knitted creatures on sale at an exhibition titled Crafts and Cakes at Sofi's Bar in Leith. Organised by Rachel Henderson (there's a pub knitting thing she does at the same bar). There should be plenty of other work on show and for sale. Free cakes as well. Starts at 6pm-late.

Hopefully I'll get some more of these monster on the go and get selling them online.

I really wish I was back in New York, Urban Outfitters always had cool clothes and stuff in there and were so cheap in comparison to over here in the UK. I bought a really cool Local Celebrity tee from there for about £10 and later managed to get dye all over it - I was gutted.

Serial Cut

The stuff over at http://www.serialcut.com/ is an a league of its own. Its really good to see people imaging making in 3D and cutting and pasting in the real world without choosing to just do it all digitally. Inspiring.

Funnily enough the stuff for Colour&Illusions Fan Poster a few images down - with the Purple words and such - we have some of those in our studio after stealing them from a skip in Glasgow one early morning.

Izima Kaoru - Super Likeee

I'm a really big fan of the BBC 3 TV show, Japanorama. On a recent issue focusing on Horror and Japan being the scariest and most haunted place in the world, the work of Kaoru Izima was featured.

His wok reminds me a lot of Joel Meyerowitz (who recently published a book of photos documenting and photographing the work done at ground zero after 9/11) and also of Andreas Gursky. All there have use colour amazingly well, completely saturated.

Izima's shift of fashion and celebrity photography, photographing the subject from the point of view of the dead subjects soul as it rises from the body and looks back on its self. I find it really fascinating and engaging way to look at something in a different way.

I'll have to try and find the interview of him on Japanorma somewhere on the Internet.

EDIT: Unfortunatly the decided to ditch the very last shot with the guy getting shot and the pink blood. Incase you haven't seen it, watch the previous version all the way to the end. Personally I think it was a shame to loose the shot (no pun intended).

Jusitce have released another great video by the same people that did the last advert for Ed Banger records (the label they are signed to). This time round, the artwork is animating on peoples tees as they move around the club. Following along the same lines, the artwork styles is similar but takes place on the front of peoples tees. Nothing but amazing.

The last shot with the guy with the gun on his shirt is genius and a great little interaction.

Well worth a look at... reminds me a lot of another shop Magenta Ink that specialize in expensive cards and the like - all of course hand printed either litho, letter press or screened. Makes me want to go out and make some books and bind stuff.

Being surrounded by constant talk and drawing of tea cups and cake all the time recently, I was highly excited to find just find Threadless.com (one of my favourite Tee companies) have just set up a new website as part of their lovesthreadless blog called Threadless loves cakes.

The premise is pretty simple: Bake a cake, and decorate it to match your favorite Threadless shirt design:
I like cake. You like cake. Cake cake cake. Bake us a cake of your best interpretation of your absolute favoritest Threadless design. Be crazy creative, if you’re good with cake. Make a straight up decorated design or whatever your take is on certain design elements. Send us a pic (or several, preferred) of your finished creation. Take a few of the process, too. Hell, even if you suck at baking, the absolute worst thing that happens is you eat cake. And that’s probably the best absolute worst thing *ever*.

Anybody who is familiar with the excellent tech and gadget website Engadget may remember a similar idea they have Tech Cakes - certainly worth a look.
